ELIZABETH
FRY SOCIETY OF OTTAWA CELEBRATES
PERSONS
DAY, OCTOBER 18
Persons Day represents a landmark victory in the
struggle of Canadian women for equality.
Prior to 1929, women were not legally
recognized or treated equal under the law. At the time, English Common Law declared
"women are persons in matters of pains and penalties, but are not persons in matters
or rights and privileges". That is, until five Alberta women -- known as "The
Famous Five" -- joined together for the lengthy legal and political battle known
as the Persons Case.
On October 18, 1929 the British Privy Council overturned
a Supreme Court decision and declared that women were legally persons and therefore
eligible for appointment to the Senate.
The five brave women who devoted
their efforts to this cause were Judge Emily Murphy, Nellie McClung, Irene Parlby,
Louise McKinney and Henrietta Muir Edwards. Their work brought about changes in
the law that not only enabled women to be appointed senators, but also reinforced
the right of women in Canada to participate in all aspects of public life.
As
well as a celebration, this day also gives a chance for reflection on the continuing
struggle to achieve equality for Canadian women.
Each year, Persons Day
is the highlight of Women's History Month every October.
Happy Persons Day
and Women's History Month to all of our sisters!
"People must
know the past to understand the present and face the future."
- Nellie McClung,
1935
